Controller

The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) is the association that represents all U.S. investor-owned electric companies. Our members provide electricity for more than 220 million Americans and operate in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In addition to our U.S. members, EEI has more than 65 international electric companies, with operations in more than 90 countries, as International Members, and hundreds of industry suppliers and related organizations as Associate Members.

This is a hybrid position which requires the incumbent to reside in the District of Columbia metropolitan area and come into the office a minimum of three days each week with two of the mandatory days being Tuesday and Wednesday.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES of the CONTROLLER

Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will provide oversight of the financial operations of EEI. The Controller will manage select staff members of the internal accounting team.

Financial Operations and Leadership

  • Provide oversight of financial operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance and transparency.
  • Monitor cash flow and financial performance and serve as point of contact for EEI bank accounts.
  • Provide oversight of EEI and related entity corporate credit cards and staff combined liability credit cards.
    • Confirmation of account reconciliations, reviewing journal entries, purchase invoices, orders, new vendor requests, credit card requests and stakeholder approvals.
  • Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Management of five direct reports within a 15 person internal accounting team.

Financial Reporting

  • Review and analyze financial reports for EEI and related affiliates.
  • Support the development of budget proposals and reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist CFO with preparation and review of financial reports, partner and lead.
  • Provide analytical assistance and work in conjunction with department personnel to help analyze budgets.

GAAP Accounting & Audit

  • Review EEI and related entities trial balance and financial statements.
    • Review draft audited financial statements and disclosures.
  • Serve as point of contact with EEI’s audit firm.
    • Review all audit schedules and documents provided to the audit firm for EEI and related entities.
    • Organize and manage auditor requested items and staff assignments.

Tax Return & Related Annual Reports

  • Provide oversight of all tax work prepared for EEI to include six annual field tax returns; monthly sales and use tax returns
    • Department of Commerce annual filings and tax notices.
    • Ensure compliance with tax regulations.
    • Serve as point of contact to financial firms to ensure accurate support for returns.

Other Duties

  • Work closely with the member engagement team to provide member dues calculations and analysis.
  • Special projects as assigned by the CFO.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with 501(c)(6) Associations strongly preferred. Must have experience with organizations that have annual revenue greater than $50 million.

  • A minimum of 15 years of progressive accounting experience is required. CPA highly preferred.
  • Strong corporate background and experience in financial reporting, budget preparation, GAAP, accounting software’s, MS Excel, Word, not-for-profit accounting, budgeting and tax.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Detailed oriented and ability to troubleshoot accounting issues.
  • Excellent communication skills and strong team player
  • Ability to work effectively with a broad range of staff and external stakeholders.

COMPENSATION

The salary range for this role is $190,000-210,000. Starting annual salary will be determined on individual qualifications. EEI also offers an annual performance incentive which is prorated for mid-year start dates. This incentive is typically up to 10% of the base salary.
